Dental Abcess Treatment
A dental abcess is a little bubble in the gum that becomes painful. It must be treated, and will not go away on its own. We use our in-house CBCT scanner to find the canals quickly and relieve you of pain fast.
What is it and What is the Treatment?
A dental abscess is a little bubble in the gum that becomes painful. This bubble is created when when you’ve got an infection in the centre of the tooth that the tooth tries to contain. There are nerves inside the tooth and all the teeth in the jaw are linked by the same nerve, so it can cause pain throughout the mouth.
It needs to be treated. If left untreated you may start to get pus coming out of the mouth, experience bad breath and the abcess can expand and weaken the jaw. There are blood vessels in the jaw that are linked to your heart, there have been cases where patients get endocarditis - an infection of the tooth causing an infection of the heart. It’s very important to get it treated as soon as possible.
It will need to be treated by endodontics - Root Canal Treatment:
- An opening is made in the tooth
- The canals are cleaned and the infected tissue is removed using an endodontic file
- The canals are then filled with a permanent material
- The opening is sealed with filling. In some cases, a post is inserted for extra support
- A new crown is cemented onto the rebuilt tooth
Extraction Alternative: Save the Tooth
This procedure can also be done as an alternative to extraction if the tooth can be saved and will provide pain relief. It can also be performed before an extensive treatment, for example if the tooth is badly deranged or there’s a risk for nerve damage, a root canal can be done before fitting a crown.
A Detailed, Digital Diagnosis
We use a CBCT scan and magnifaction loops to find the canals, it’s near impossible to perform a good root canal treatment without this step, most clinics do not have access to one of these machines. We also use reciproc equipment, the files have curvutures for cleaning which is useful for when the root canal is not straight, offers more precision and is both safe and effective. We also use hot fill material inserted with a gun to create a really densely packed tooth. Traditional filling material is like very tiny cones that are more difficult to pack compactly.
