Lumecca-I: IPL Therapy for Dry Eyes
Lumecca-I is a non-invasive treatment for dry eyes that uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy. What is Lumecca-I, and how does it work?
Lumecca-I is an advanced, non-surgical treatment that uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology to effectively manage and treat dry eye disease, ocular rosacea, and blepharitis. The treatment involves gentle pulses of light directed around the eyes to target the underlying causes of these conditions, providing long-lasting relief from symptoms like dryness, irritation, discomfort, and redness.
During the procedure, the IPL energy is used to open blocked meibomian glands in the eyelids. These glands are essential for producing oils that keep the eyes lubricated. When the glands become clogged or inflamed, they can’t produce enough oil, leading to dry eye symptoms. Lumecca-I works by reducing inflammation and restoring normal gland function, improving tear quality, and maintaining natural eye lubrication. This makes it an ideal option for people with dry eyes, including contact lens wearers.
Lumecca-I is also effective for treating additional conditions that contribute to dry eye discomfort, such as ocular rosacea and blepharitis. The light energy from the IPL technology helps seal “leaky” or abnormal blood vessels, preventing the leakage of inflammatory cells that can damage the meibomian glands and impair their function. It can also target and treat Demodex (eye mites) in lash follicles, a common cause of blepharitis.
Why choose IPL for dry eyes?
Lumecca-I offers an effective solution for dry eyes by targeting malfunctioning oil glands in the eyelids. IPL therapy helps reduce gland blockages and inflammation, restoring their ability to produce oils that keep the eyes lubricated. This non-invasive treatment provides lasting relief without the need for downtime, making it an excellent alternative to traditional dry eye remedies.

FAQs
What does the treatment feel like?
During the treatment, you’ll feel flashes of light along with a sensation similar to a light snap from an elastic band. It’s normal to experience some redness and a slight warmth on the skin afterward, but this typically fades within an hour.
How long does one session take?
A typical Lumecca IPL session lasts about 20 to 30 minutes. The procedure itself is relatively quick, and you can often resume normal activities immediately afterward.
What can I expect after the treatment?
After the treatment, you may experience slight redness or mild discomfort around the eyes, but this typically resolves within a few hours. Most patients feel improvement in their dry eye symptoms within a few days to weeks following treatment.
How many treatments will I need to see results?
Most patients require a series of 3 to 4 treatments spaced about 4 weeks apart for optimal results. After the initial series, maintenance treatments may be recommended depending on the severity of your dry eye condition.
Can I have this treatment if I have sensitive skin or other eye conditions?
If you have certain eye conditions, such as active eye infections, severe rosacea, or skin sensitivities, Lumecca IPL may not be suitable for you. It’s important to discuss your medical history with us to determine if the treatment is right for you.
